Grammar and Writing Web Sites
When you’re writing your business plan or proposal at 2 a.m. and cannot remember whether to use affect or effect, what do you do? You go to some of these Web sites to get quick answers to all your grammatical and writing-style questions.
Guide to Grammar and Writing http://webster.commnet.edu/HP/pages/darling/grammar
The “Guide to Grammar and Writing” is extremely interactive and provides links to other sites. It is prepared by Charles Darling, professor of English/Humanities for English courses at Capital Community in Hartford, Connecticut.
Instantly, you can find the rules for agreement of subject and verb, abbreviations, use of numbers and other basic grammar concepts. Don’t forget to look at their “deadly sins checklist” before rewriting your plan.
This site has over 150 computer-graded quizzes and frequently asked grammar questions. If you can’t find the answer here, you can use the ASK GRAMMAR hyperlink; the answer will be posted in their Grammar Logs—sometimes within hours, almost always within a day or two. Full responses are sometimes sent through e-mail, or you will be notified that answers have been posted in the Grammar Logs.
Finally, the online dictionaries and thesauri are really great; our personal favorites are:
The Exploding Dictionary http://projects.ghostwheel.com/dictionary/a
Plum Design Visual Thesaurus http://www.plumbdesign.com/thesaurus/
Hypertext Webster Gateway http://work.ucsd.edu:5141/cgi-bin/http_webster?.
Merriam-Webster Dictionary/Thesaurus http://www.m-w.com/netdict.htm
Roget’s Thesaurus http://www.thesaurus.com/ We would appreciate your feedback on these sites. We think they will be very helpful for most of your needs, but with so many new additions to the net, we will continue to search for other sites. In the meantime, let us know if you find a better one.
